MOVIE SUMMARY
NOTE: This movie is not fully based on Lois Duncan's Killing Mr. Griffin, but it was inspired (to an extent) by the book, so I added it up here. Here is what Lois Duncan said at CNN's Ask the Author (link no longer available):
Kevin Williamson (who wrote the film script for I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER) says KILLING MRS. TINGLE is his own original story, and he's had the film script sitting in a desk drawer for years.Maybe it's mere coincidence that, a number of years ago, a movie company that had an option on KILLING MR. GRIFFIN hired Kevin Williamson to write the film script. The option ran out, and the company tried to convince me to renew it by showing me Mr. Williamson's "wonderful script." It was so violent and the story was so far removed from my book that I refused to renew the option, and Mr. Williamson was, understandably, not at all happy. I, then, sold the option to GRIFFIN to another studio, who had another writer write a script, and it was made into a very good TV film which was an NBC Movie of the Week.
I've often wondered what happened to Kevin Williamson's unused script.
Teaching Mrs. Tingle was released August 20, 1999 staring Katie Holmes (Dawson's Creek) and Helen Mirren (British actress from the movie Prime Suspect). Here is a summary of the movie taken from a fan Killing Mrs. Tingle movie site (link no longer available):
Just as young, pretty and popular Leigh Ann is preparing to graduate from high school, her future seems bright and wide-open to possibilities. But when another classmate sets Leigh Ann up in her History class she receives a failing mark from that classroom's teacher, the much-feared and despised Mrs. Tingle. Because of that one black mark, Leigh Ann loses the opportunity to be her school's valedictorian, an opening that Mary Beth, the rival student who framed Leigh Ann, is quick to seize. With her post-graduation dreams swiftly eroding away, Leigh Ann comes up with the only option available to her. Before school lets out for the summer, Mrs. Tingle's History class is going to need a substitute teacher."
This is a semi-autobiographical work for Kevin Williamson, although it is in fact loosely-based on the book "Killing Mr. Griffin" by the writer of I Know What You Did Last Summer (Lois Duncan).Williamson is directing and it is set for an August 1999 release.
The movie was originally titled Killing Mrs. Tingle, but it is said that the shooting incident at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, persuaded the studios to change the title (true or false)
